AlterNet is by far the largest dissident media organization featured on this site. According to their website, AlterNet has over a million unique site visits per month, and over 7 million page views per month.

The main goal of AlterNet is to highlight alternative perspectives and opinions that will not feature in mainstream media. Although they cover a huge arrange of topics, their fundamental aim is to pick up stories that wouldn't be taken by the largest media companies. While they include specific coverage of the Trump Administration and major political events such as the 2018 midterms, they also include sections on media criticism, policy areas like education and citizens' rights, and even food and culture.

All of these perspectives are aimed to provide outstanding content that captures and shares narratives that would otherwise be ignored by contemporary media giants.

Their mission statement says:

"AlterNet publishes grassroots success stories and inspirational narratives alongside hard-hitting critiques of policies, investigative reports and expert analysis. We emphasize workable solutions to persistent social problems. Our editorial mix underscores a commitment to fairness, equality and global stewardship, and to making connections across generational, ethnic and issue lines."

AlterNet was founded in 1987 by the Alternate Journalism Institute and designed to capture and highlight stories that other media failed to cover adequately. In 2018, they were bought by Raw Story, a left-leaning online news organization. The change allowed Raw Story writers to feature on AlterNet, but most of AlterNet's original contributors were kept on staff.
